Bandoneon player, arranger

 Biographie

Santiago Cimadevilla was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was from a young age active as guitar player in several bands, and studied classical piano at the Conservatorio Municipal Manuel de Falla.

In 1999 he moved to The Netherlands. He taught himself bandoneon and later on studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he continued his bandoneon studies with Leo Vervelde and later with Victor Hugo Villena. He was a member of Orquesta Tipica OTRA, with which he performed throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France.

He has several times been asked to perform as a special guest with various orchestras, including the argentine Orquesta Tipica Fernandez Fierro during their first European tour and tango legend Alfredo Marcucci’s Sexteto Veritango.
He collaborated also with young composers of tango and contemporary music such as Mathis Nitschke and Juan Maria Solare.
 

Currently he’s a member of the quintet Racing Club Tango and the Bremen-based ensemble Flautango, groups in which he’s also active as an arranger. Since 2008 he’s a member of Tango 5, with which he regularly performs in northwest England.

He’s also the bandoneon player for Los Taitas (with Hernan Ruiz and Orlando Miño), the Hernan Ruiz Trio, Mabel Gonzalez, the jazz band Celano-Baggiani group, as well as several ensembles with, among others, Marcos Di Paolo, Martijn van der Linden, Mark Wyman and Luc van Gestel.

He regularly performs solo bandoneon concerts, and since 2005 has been often invited to perform as soloist for Luis Bacalov’s Misa Tango with symphony orchestra and choir. He’s also often performed Astor Piazzolla’s work for bandoneon and orchestra and his original quintet pieces with several ensembles.

Santiago Cimadevilla studied classical piano at the Conservatorio Municipal Manuel de Falla in Buenos Aires, Argentinie.

In The Netherlands he studied bandoneon at the Rotterdam Conservatory, initially with Leo Vervelde and later on with Victor Hugo Villena.

He travels regularly to Buenos Aires, where he also takes lessons and attends workshops, including bandoneon repair and orchestra practices.

 

 Artistic activity

Between 2002 and 2005, Santiago performed with the Orquesta Tipica OTRA, along with members of the Rotterdam Conservatory. With this orchestra he performed in many of the major concert halls in the Netherlands, including the Concertgebouw and the Tropentheater in Amsterdam, De Doelen in Rotterdam, the Dunya Festival, and Musis Sacrum in Arnhem.

As a member of OTRA, he performed in 2005 for VARA's TV show Masterclass with Sonja Barend and famous argentine tango dancer Juan Carlos Copes; and in 2004 for TV Rijnmond’s Reiziger in Rotterdam with Han Reiziger. 

In 2003 he was asked to perform with the argentine Orquesta Tipica Fernandez Fierro during their concerts in the Netherlands (Haarlem and Rotterdam), as part of their first European tour.

In 2003 and again in 2004 he was invited to perform as a special guest with tango legend Alfredo Marcucci's Sexteto Veritango, joining him for his performances in Arnhem's Musis Sacrum.

In 2003 he began performing with the Bremen-based ensemble Flautango, together with Efrain Oscher and argentine pianist Gustavo Lanzon. With this group he performs regularly in Germany, most often in Bremen and Hamburg.

In 2004 he becomes one of the founding members of Racing Club Tango op, a tango quintet where he is active as a bandoneon player and arranger, together with Martijn van der Linden, Daniel Lehmann, Mark Wyman, Marcos di Paolo and argentine singer Maria Jose Ortiz. In 2006 the band's first CD was produced and presented at the Mozaiek theater in Amsterdam.

With Racing Club he performs regularly in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Switzerland.

 
In 2004 he performed Kurt Weill's Kleine Dreigroschenmuzik with the Nationaal Jeugdorkest conducted by Etienne Siebens, the performances taking place in Theater LUX in Nijmegen, Podium Gigant in Apeldoorn and Musis Sacrum in Arnhem.

In 2005 he performed for the first time Luis Bacalov's Misa Tango, a composition for orchestra, choir and bandoneon soloist. The proram also included bandoneon solo works.

In 2006 he again performed the Misa Tango, this time with the Eindhoven-based choir De Toonkunst and the Helycon orkest, conducted by Ed Verschuren. The performance took place in the Muziekcentrum Frits Philips in Eindhoven, the program included also arrangements for orchestra and bandoneon solo of Astor Piazzolla's Adios Nonino and Libertango, the arrangements were written by Mark Hendriks.


In 2006 he was asked to perform as a special guest with the swedish tango orchestra Tangarte, with whom he later on recorded a CD.

He also started cooperating with the jazz band Celano-Baggiani Group, a unique mix of modern tango and jazz, performing several times in the jazz circuit in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Dordrecht.

 

He has played several times as a guest with various dutch formations, including Mala Pinta (several performances in the Netherlands), Tango Dorado (performances in Amsterdam and The Hague), and Trio Tangata (Italy tour in 2006).

In 2006 he also performed in the Bimhuis (Amsterdam) with singer Beatriz Aguiar for her CD presentation.

In 2007 he’s asked to perform and arrange tango music for the RNW’s (Radio Netherlands) jubileum celebration at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, where he shared the stage with artists such as Bløf , Trilok Gurtu, Tania Kross and Randal Corsen. 

In 2008 he’s invited to perform Astor Piazzolla’s Doble Concierto for Bandoneon, Guitar and Orchestra at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, with guitar soloist Federico Diaz Paez and conductor Federico Abiuso.

As of 2009, he performs also regularly in several formations, collaborating with artists such as argentine guitar players Hernan Ruiz and Marcos Di Paolo, bassist Luc van Gestel, and pianist Mark Wyman. He also often works with musicians from the classical and contemporary scene, such as bassist Quirijn van Regteren Altena, hoboist Bart Schneemann and many others.

He’s also frequently worked with various classical ensembles, such as Liepaja’s Symphony Orchestra (Astor Piazzolla’s Concierto para Bandoneon, Latvia), the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, the Nieuwegeins Amateur Symphonieorkest (Luis Bacalov’s Misa Tango), and the Helios Ensemble (premiere of Trajectoire, by Daan Manneke, and Magnificat, by Astrid Kruisselbrink)
